What Happened Last Week.

Surfing the internet last Tuesday morning, I read about a jogger being mauled by a pit bull and was killed in less than four minutes. Then, in the evening, there was a brief news report on this incident. Like most people, I was shocked and saddened by the mishap.

By the time I finished reading the same article in the newspapers the next morning, something made me called my mother and relate this unfortunate incident to her. At that moment, I was wondering if the victim was her younger brother because they had the same surname and he was around that age as well.

She wasn’t sure and wanted to call her youngest brother if he have any information. So just before I hung up, I told her I will be calling her back to check on this. Immediately, she called her youngest brother. But, no one answered. Fortunately, she made another call and managed to speak with an auntie who reluctantly let the cat out of the bag.

Like others, the prospect of losing someone dearest to our hearts is a somber, almost untenable thought. Chocked with emotions she confirmed that this was her younger brother. My uncle and his family were already on their way to be with the victim’s family in this hour of pain and grief. After making some calls, I left everything aside and proceed to do what needs to be done immediately.

You see, all of us have lost touch with them for some forty years or so. I did not expect the jogger that was mauled by a pit bull was so closely related to us. He died at the scene after the dog bit him on the neck, face and with his right ear almost ripped off, at an age of 74 years.

More members of the family were informed of our uncle’s tragic death. Every one was taken aback and made their way back to pay their last respect gradually. By the morning of the funeral service, members of the family, including my mother, sister and brother-in-law had gathered to pay our last respect. Indeed, it was difficult and painful for us to accept his demise in an uncommon way. However, there were no alternatives except to look at the bigger picture. If I may add, his sacrifice generated much public awareness, especially on the handling of some difficult to manage species.

We may have strong imprints from the past. But, if we keep reminding ourselves of the pains of the past, most probably, we will end up fighting against each other and consequently everyone in the family will be destroyed. Do we need to punish ourselves like that? In this case, his sudden departure paved the way for his loved ones and other family members to let go the baggage they have been carrying for so long. With the Grace of God, every family member can now look forward to forging the bond that have been missing for so many years.

As I looked around those in attendance last Saturday, I saw faces that were extremely weary and sad. Some were tear strained. And it was an agonizing thing to watch one of his children crying uncontrollably. The thought that someday, I, too, will go through this ceremony was brought to my mind. I felt a painful stab into my heart. Then, I felt a lump in my throat swelling and as I tried swallowing the sad impression, I felt better when I think of Christians referring to a departed loved one as having, “gone home to be with the Lord.”

We struggle in this life with many uncertainties. We are never assured of anything except God. He is the one constant, unchangeable element in all things, the hope of all who trust in Him. God understand the anguish. What death has stolen will be replaced immeasurably by the good hand of our Lord. Our hope is not in this life but in eternity. Each sigh of grief will be replaced with the unspeakable joy of reigning, side by side, together with Christ forever ……….

That is sad story and this is not the first time I saw on the news about those types of dogs, their owners will say they aren’t that type of dog unless you trained them but I don’t know because every time I see about a person being attacked it’s those pit bulls.

And your heart just goes out to the family who was attacked by the dog..I wonder how the dog owner feels about it, I wonder if they are sitting there crying for that family are they offering to help with medical expenses….It’s a sad thing when dogs attack people…if you ask me something must be done….make the owners accountable…that is what I would suggest…

    • Michael says:

Thanks Desiray. In this case, I understand the owner and her parents were present during the wake and funeral service. They apologized and a nominal fine was imposed by an institution of power. Appreciate your valued comment.

God is always good and is always there for the hurting heart. When we can find in a portion of our grief something to be thankful for, he will fill up our empty sadness with joy once again…..

  6. Oh, Michael, I am so very sorry for yours and your family’s loss. It’s hard enough to lose someone, but in such a violent way ! I pray you’ll find peace in time. I have written many poems about loss, perhaps some of those will help your mother and the rest of your family? here is Valley: http://heathergracestewart.com/2009/04/29/valley/
and ‘The silence and the sound’ and ‘when i finally make starlight’ and ‘my heart has no meter’ are ones that deal with finding hope after loss in my book ‘Carry On Dancing’
    best wishes

Out of all bad comes some good Michael. There are good things that have yet to be unfolded. Death is always a sad moment until we remind ourselves that life does not end, we continue on in a new life. I am sorry you had to go through such a horrific thing. VK

I can’t say it better than Visionkeeper. God bless your family and I am sorry for your loss.

    Michael ~

So very sorry to learn of your loss – and what a horrible way for your family to find out such terrible news! I do appreciate that you didn’t turn this tragedy into an anti-pit-bull rant. They’re powerful dogs, obviously capable of mauling or killing an adult man… but if they’re raised correctly by people who understand how to be an effective pack leader they can be the best dogs in the world. I’m sorry that your uncle had the misfortune of running afoul of one who was NOT raised by an effective pack leader, and I’m glad that the owners were contrite and that they were fined. When a person’s irresponsibility leads to the death of another person, then the person at fault should be held accountable.

It’s good that you have your faith to see you through this loss. I too take great comfort in the fact that I’ll meet my loved ones again someday.

    ~ Heather

    • Michael says:

Heather, Thanks for writing. Great insight for every one. The loss is certainly painful. But, what is important is we have to let go and move on optimistically. Regards !!!

Michael, I am so sorry to hear about your Uncle’s untimely death. Please accept, and extend my deepest condolences to the rest of your family for your loss. I do, however, believe that the timing of our death’s are predetermined when we are born. Think of all of the people that should have died, but didn’t, or of some of the other ‘freak’ tragedies that we hear of,from time to time where some people still should have had years of life left (as is the case with your uncle). It is so sad for the living, though, to lose a loved one on the spur of the moment as your family has done. I wish you and your family peace and closure as you grieve your uncles loss. Marcy

  13. Terra says:

My condolences to you and your family. I am sure pain is felt on the owners of the dog. Life is so short and we never know how or when it’s our time to leave. Reading your story reminds me of my own family…. how people can take issues that can be resolved if we really want to and still be in union with one another. Baggage continues to build up and hearts can become calloused. Until someone passes away. It’s during those times that some will start to appreciate life and love ones more. I always tell my family that it’s better to say I Love You and show affection now while it can be heard and felt because its to late for the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” once the loved one is gone. It’s never too late to mend ways. I am so glad that your family started to pick up the pieces and begin a new journey with one another.

God bless you and be encouraged.

    • Michael says:

Hey Terra, Welcome and thanks for sharing your experience. Very true and well said. I look forward to welcoming you back on a happier occasion. God Bless.

      • Terra says:

        Hello Michael,

Thank you for the welcome. I appreciate it. I look forward to reading your posts no matter what the occasion. May we be of encouragement to one another no matter what season of life we may be enduring. For the good and for the bad. God will get the glory out of it all when we seek him. Again, thank you for the kind welcome. It’s a blessing.

  16. Michael, I was stunned to read this post from you. What a dreadfully tragic experience for you and your family. I can’t begin to imagine the emotional pain that his children are going through.
Amazingly, through this heartache, you still see that God is love, and see that through this set of circumstances bonds have been re-formed within your family, a true healing has taken place.
    Many blessings to you.

  17. Gary Lum says:

Very sorry Michael to read of your family’s loss and yours too. Thank you for the poignant piece.

  18. Jeannie says:

Dear Michael, I’d like to extend my condolences to you and your family as well. How tragic and very sad this is. The silver lining of course, is as you say, the family reunited through this heartache. It doesn’t diminish the pain of loss, however, and I pray you and your family are comforted in your love for each other. Hugs to you friend, Jeannie

    • Michael says:

Hey Jeannie, Led by our elders, the entire family have taken a big step in this aspect. They responded appropriately as well. All of us wish that this will pave the way towards a better relationship in the near future. Take care Jeannie !!!

  19. Jonesingafter40 says:

How surreal to read a tragic story like that on the web and then find it was someone in your family. I am sorry for your loss.

  20. Colline says:

Blessings to you and your family during your time of loss. It is heart-rending to lose someone you love – especially so when it is a death that could have been avoided through knowledge.

    • Michael says:

My understanding is the dog was initially roaming freely inside the house compound. Came out through the rubbish compartment. Attacked and went in. Two kind souls rushed to help but could not get the dog to let go. Sad close. May he rest in peace. Thanks Colline.

  21. bibuji says:

I pray for you, your uncle, and all your family. It would need mental strength and emotional capacity to describe a sad incident. I’ve realized that you have the ones.

    • Michael says:

Appreciate your kind thought Bibuji. You look after your self well. Hope your fever have dissipated by now. Regards !!!

I’ve nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.
Blogging is very new for me therefore I didn’t know anything about these awards. It’s sharing personal thoughts with the outside world – maybe to inspirate and help others but also yourself. I think it’s a brilliant way to see that we are all human beings who often share the same passion or struggle with similar issues in our lives. Therefore I like your blogs and find them inspiring and want to nominate you for this award.
If you choose to accept the award, you’ll find the “instructions” linked here: http://lifeisyourpieceofart.wordpress.com/2012/05/17/very-inspiring-blogger-award/

  28. My condolences to you and your family.

  29. Oh my – it has been difficult for me to catch up on some of my bloggers posts but of all days to come by. I have read something so sad. I am so sorry for this unexpected loss. There is always a reason for things like this to happen. I can see that your uncle’s passing will not be in vain. It is his death that has opened the doors to mending. It is his loss of life that will make you and all your family members aware of how fragile life really is. Everyday should be one spent as if it were our last. It helps us say and do everything we want so as to not have regrets. Your post will do that for others. as well.
Blessings to you and your family,
    Isadora

    • Michael says:

Thanks Isadora. The strained relationship is between his family and the others in the big family. Meanwhilr, have a great weekend and God Bless.

  30. The last paragraph IS SO TRUE AND CORRECT
AMEN!!!! To this

    Michael,
I am so sorry to hear this news! Condolences to you and to your family!
Still uncertainties are ahead of us!
    Take care Michael!

  32. e1aine says:

Please accept my condolences. This must have been a very difficult post to write and yet you are so eloquent. Finding ‘lost’ family does provide some comfort in my experience (lost through apathy in our case, nasty thing apathy), so I hope this will equally give comfort to your Uncle’s loved ones.

  33. Karmic Diva says:

Hugs Michael. It is a sad loss but you turned it into very inspirational thoughts.

  34. Michael, so sorry for this loss. Being a dog lover and living on an island where local Hawaiians of various descent love their pitbulls but often use them unconsciously as an extension of their own bravado, I am both saddened by what happens to humans as a result, as well as how these gentle creatures are trained and disciplined, often unkindly, to bring out their worst attributes.

May you all discover peace in your hearts and compassion toward one another, as well as toward all beasts who start out innocent enough but whose very nature is warped by the fears and aggressions of their trainers.

    Sending you much aloha.

    • Michael says:

Thanks Bela. We are coping well. You have a fantastic week and take good care of your self Bela. Regards !!!

Hi Michael, I would like to offer my condolences, I have just this minute read of this tragic event. Although it is a time of sorrow and mourning I would like to add that the Word says that God takes pleasure in the death of a saint. I take my hat off to your uncle, 74 and still jogging, what a man. Well brother he has shed his earthly tabernacle and is now jogging, and I may add with vigour that he never knew in his earthly walk. It is not good bye but rather till we meet again. Be blessed my friend and thanks for supporting me in my blogging, it is so encouraging, thanks once again.

  37. I haven’t had much time to be on the computer of late – this post was sad and joyous in tandem. My heart’s love and blessings to all concerned. A tragic death like this breaks ones heart. That poor man must have been terrified…I can only pray the horrific scene was so quick being in shock kept him from realizing what was happening. My husband almost lost him arm in a conveyor belt accident, and to this day he doesn’t remember it almost being ripped off – shock, I believe. We don’t know “the why” of incidents like this, but we must keep the faith. The blessing is that God is ultimately in charge and I believe this man’s Spirit is resting with Him. I remember when my mama passed on, the family shared love that hadn’t been active for years and years…in that way it was memorable-and to honor her legacy of love.
God bless you and all your family. I didn’t know until today.

I’m so sorry to read about your loss… How terribly shocking and then for you to find out the way you did. So, so sad. I don’t remember seeing this post but I am grateful you shared it again so I can extend my condolences. It is the least we can do in the blogging community… Be blessed!

Thanks for the very kind words my friend. Many things happen beyond our expectations as well. Keep posting and keep excelling !!!
