Thinking Allowed ……

Are we part of the problem
or, a part of the solution?

Chances are high you agree that; “Is the glass half full or half empty?” is a popular metaphor used to contrast optimism with pessimism …… In our rapidly changing world today, barriers of all kinds are fast falling apart. Besides, in the wake of the recent years, we see financial institutions going busts, markets tumbling and economies fraught with uncertainties. Some even became or fast becoming dysfunctional too.

While optimists believe that every cloud have a silver lining. Pessimists just see the potential for rain. Optimists sees the light at the end of the tunnel or a hole in the doughnut, pessimists are not entirely wrong when all they could see are the headlights of an oncoming train or only the hole.

Our ability to deal with problems depend very much on how we view it. Say, if we sees it as an obstacle towering over us, it is almost certain that we will feel overwhelmed, discouraged, incompetent and making us feel like giving up or quit for good. However, if we remind ourselves that problems are only temporary and changeable, that it may present some opportunities to success in the mid or longer term, we will certainly tackle it with an expectation of a successful turnaround or outcome.

While optimism may not help us to avoid the feelings of a loss of positive outcomes, direction or a loss of any kind, it seems acceptance when reinforced with a positive outlook can be valuable. Finding something positive in an adverse situation is not going to be easy. Or, even changing the frame – trying to find positive meanings in a seemingly negative situation will not magically make things rosier. But, don’t you think it will help us learn and coming to terms with setbacks and so forth?

Keep reminding yourself of the things in your life that you have to be grateful for. Low self-esteem is linked with pessimism, anxiety and depression. If we consider ourselves unworthy of success, the cold truth is we will never appreciate it, even if it comes our way. Thus, your first step in your quest to feeling good about yourself is choosing to love and accepting yourself unconditionally.

Are we part of the problem or a part of the solution? I reckon we are both. In our highly competitive, socially connected, and fast changing world today, as an individual, we have opinions and take stands on all issues based on our own perceptions. We are team players as well, whether at work, among friends or as a family member. So while we are part or will remain to be part of the problem (on all kinds of issues) to some people, we too, will remain part of the solution for some as well ……….

Have a great day !!!

  2. I heard a speaker yesterday talk about the ‘glass half-full’ metaphor. He said we should just be thankful there is a glass at all. Life itself is a precious gift to be treasured. Have a great week!

He is right as well. Life is ….. The glass as a safety net. Thanks for sharing, Harrison. Have another great week 😃

Good thought provoking post. However, in so doing, we must all remember that as the “world” changes we are to be separate from the sin of the world. We are told in God’s Word that He does not change. Malachi 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

So while we remember effective ways to reach out to people who do not know Him, we must always remember that Godly correction, if need be, is a form of love, and that God indeed never changes. This is a day we are living in when the Body of Christ is turning away, being led astray by perversions and the ways of the world. This is a time when we must stand firm as one with God’s truths.

God bless you, and thanks again brother for a great post!

How we think creates our reality. I choose to think as brightly and positively as I can for I choose not to live in the darkness. So empowering to know we have the choice. We must never take that for granted…Thanks Michael. Blessings..VK

My mother always told us kids to be the solution never be a problem to anyone or anything. For everything in life has a solution…

We are BOTH ~ but some if not most do not know how to get out of the way to let those who know how to effectively correct the problem – do it!

  13. I think optimism is the seed for resilience. Optimism is the seed for hope. We have to believe it’s possible…even when it might not be. This is what makes us…try…or try again.
    Great post Michael!

  14. Good message, in the face of the global chaos we’re all facing. We can only do what we can do in our corner of the world. An attitude of gratitude keeps things in better perspective than feeling hopeless. After all, if we have a little hope in our hearts, we’ll likely see the rainbows when they come. Whereas if our heads are buried in negativity, we can’t even look up. If you know what I mean 😉
